“Fanny, I want to give my painting to you as a gift!”

“Look, your hoodie is black, your trousers are black, and even your shoes are black as well. All you wear is black, there is nothing else in your outfit, wouldn’t that be boring.”

“I chose a lot of beautiful colours on purpose. So that you could stick this onto your bag or your pocket, then you wouldn't be surrounded in only black colour! Everyday, you could look at these bright, colourful patterns, and then your mood would become just as bright!”

Last week, SAWA launched a new set of products — the pins. The inspiration of the design came from one of the recent workshops that SAWA did.

The workshop was to create a Rangoli from the Diwali festival, We hope that, by getting to know the cultural backgrounds behind Diwali and Rangoli, the kids could have an opportunity to experience a variety of cultures from different countries. The patterns on the pin are designed by the designers from SAWA product design group, who took the Rangoli patterns that the kids did during the workshop and made into a pin design.

After listening to the explanations, the kids started to create their own Rangoli with SAWA’s Rangoli tutorial video. The whole process went smoothly, the kids followed the instructions and began by drawing small flowers at the center of the paper. Later on they added up patterns and details.

The kids are very imaginative. Some of them decided to be different from the rest of the class, instead of using warm colors such as red or orange, they chose to use dark blue and purple, so the pattern gives off a cool and natural vibe. Some of them were tired of repetition of the same pattern, therefore they created their own paintings in an asymmetrical form with beautiful details.

Some kids were late for the class and when they finally picked up the chalk, the tutorial video was almost finished. This left them quite distressed and hesitated to start their work. The teachers found out and just simply drew the whole process all over again on the blackboard. At the end of the class, most kids finished their Rangoli while others were only missing the last step of coloring.

“After the course, I lamented on the hard work my teacher did for me and my classmates. It’s not easy to give a lecture in a way that everyone can accept. Although many unexpected situations have taken place, the happiness I received from teaching was fufilling. Seeing innocent children learning about art, made me, a person who has the duty of spreading knowledge, felt that this is not only a task,  but rather a great mission. I hope my classes would be better and better later on and I can continue to explore the charm of diverse cultures with the kids.”

This year, SAWA's course has the central theme of "Colour your imagination", and all the workshops will be designed based on this theme. We also have several different subtopics underneath the overall theme.

The first unit is "Colour the culture", where we try to introduce the kids to different cultures and enjoy the various customs from different countries. This course was the second lesson of the first unit, which introduces Diwali and Rangoli, a traditional Hindu festival.

Diwali is a five days festival celebrated by locals on the first day with new moon, for ‘driving the darkness with light and triumph over evil by goodness’.

On the eve of Diwali, locals would clean and decorate their own house. People would wear new clothes, light lanterns and candles at home and the whole family would pray together. After the prayer, relatives and friends would set fireworks and exchange gifts and candies. The whole night's celebration process is somewhat similar to the Chinese New Year's Eve, giving people a sense of renewing.

Rangoli is a traditional Indian painting. Right before the festival, girls would paint all kinds of Rangolis at the door. Every house would try their best to attract Lakshmi, the female god of fortune, to bring wealth to their families for the coming year.

There are no special rules for the design of Rangoli, since it can be anything as long as it expresses their wishes for the coming year. Indian girls usually use chalk to draw out the outline of the pattern, then fill in the different areas with other bright colors to form a complete Rangoli.
